Grand-daughter Leeara and I arrived at 7pm half an hour before the start of the show in time to set up camp and our picnic dinner.
It was a fabulous performance getting into a stride just as the sun was setting over the harbour in Balmain. Here "the mechanicals" (dresssed as Parks&Gardens workers) began their rehearsal of the play within a play "Pyramus and Thisbe", Bottom, of course, wanting to play ALL the roles:
Leeara, laughing her socks off at Bottom's antics, became spellbound, even meditative with the arrival of darkness and the world Faery in the form of Titania
The rollicking humour of the play had the whole audience in hysterics as Titania, under Oberon's spell, falls in love with Bottom - now transformed into an Ass:
Following on from his "Venus and Adonis" Shakespeare in this play seems bent on proving the proverbial line "The course of true love never did run smooth".
Helena, Hermia, Lysander and Demetrius here get into such a mess:
Perhaps the miracle of this performance was that you had a relatively small caste playing umpteen roles. Especially interesting was the fact that Theseus and Hypollita also played the roles of Oberon and Titania, reinforcing this underlying idea in the play that chaos on the level of the humans somehow reflects the deeper chaos at the level of the faery world.
Overall highly commended/ recommended... especially if you are studying the play with me over the next two weeks. It is is still on for a few nights so don't miss it.... Ciao... over and out... it is l a t e.....!!!!
